About the EOC

The Tangipahoa Emergency Operation Center was built using funding from the FEMA Safe Room Grant and was officially opened for use in 2017. The grant was designated by FEMA specifically to allocate funds to Louisiana to build safe rooms in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike, and Isaac. Tangipahoa Parish was the first in the state to apply for the grant, as well as the first to break ground and to finish a building using the grant program. The purpose of the Tangipahoa Emergency Operation Center, or EOC for short, is to provide a centralized location for all responder agencies in the Parish to gather and provide a coordinated response in times of emergency. This state of the art facility was built on the site on the former United Methodist Church originally built in 1940. The facility utilizes many features that ensure that the building is safe, powered, and protected during times of emergency like hurricanes, floods, train derailments, and other widespread disasters that can impact the parish. Here are some of the features of this remarkable facility:
  • 13,400 Square Feet
  • Walls 8 ½ inch thick PreCast Concrete Walls
  • Panels are 8’ x 36’ (54 Total)
  • Rated at 175 mph continuous for 24 hours with 2×4 debris
  • Windows (#500) and External Doors (#600) – 2 3/4 “ Ballistic, Bullet Proof and Explosion Proof Glass
  • 2000 Gallon Potable Water Tank w/ Pressure Valve
  • 450KW CAT Diesel Generator/1000 Gallons of Fuel
  • 5000 Gallon In-Ground Sewage Tank
  • In-Building Transformer
  • Lightning Protection System
  • A/C System Backup with Weather Station
  • Positive Airflow System
