Parish receives $1.55 Million for new Amite library

Tangipahoa Parish President Gordon Burgess and Tangipahoa Parish Library Director Barry Bradford are all smiles after learning the parish will receive more than $1.55 million toward the construction of a new Amite Branch Library and TPL Administrative office facility in Amite. Burgess said the money, funded by a state CDBG award, will pay nearly 50 percent of the estimated $3.2 million cost of the new complex, which will break ground in early 2011.

AMITE---Tangipahoa Parish President Gordon Burgess announced today that the parish has received a grant award of $1.55 million in recovery funding which will be used for the new Amite branch library.

Burgess said the parish learned this week that they will receive $1,551,093 from the Office of Community Development for use in the Tangipahoa Parish Library project.

The award is part of more than $22 million that the state has earmarked for parish recovery efforts and represents almost half of what the parish has estimated the total project will cost to construct the new library facility.

"We are very pleased to announce this grant award which will aid in the construction of our new Amite branch library and parish library offices," Burgess said.

Burgess said the new facility, planned for NE Central Ave. in Amite, next door to the Fire District 1 station, will include a new library as well as administrative offices for the Tangipahoa Parish Library System.  Currently the parish rents space at a nearby shopping center for the library branch, which is one of the biggest single libraries in the parish.

The new library will include a large children's area, meeting room, technology and genealogy labs, a teen area, outdoor plazas for reading and relaxing, as well as a greater selection of multimedia collections, from CDs and DVDs to downloadable content.

The parish expects to break ground on the project in early 2011. Parish Library officials are holding a town hall meeting on Aug. 30 to introduce plans and designs for the new facility.

Burgess asks President to reconsider moratorium; says economy of entire region at stake

AMITE---On Wednesday, Tangipahoa Parish President Gordon Burgess asked the White House to lift a moratorium on offshore drilling, calling instead for immediate, "intense inspection" of rigs and production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Burgess, a 24-year veteran Parish President in south Louisiana who serves as the state's parish government representative on the Louisiana Commerce and Industry Board, said the moratorium "will cause thousands of hard working people to be laid off at a time when our local, state, and national economy can least afford it."

Likening the the moratorium to "locking the vault after the bank was robbed," Burgess said he fears the move by the federal government will "compound the economic damage done to our Tourism and Seafood Industries by also devastating the working people in our Oil and Gas Industries."

Burgess, who has more than 30 years of first-hand experience working with the oil industry, said "The economy of our entire region is very much tied to off-shore exploration and production. While I understand the magnitude of the current oil spill, it is neither indicative nor representative of off-shore drilling and production in our region." Click here to view letter.
